Free Credit Report Review Checklist: What to Look For
A report review is easier when you check the same categories every time instead of scanning randomly.
Personal information
Check names, addresses, phone numbers, employers where shown, and signs that another person’s information may be mixed into your file.
Account ownership and status
Confirm the account is yours and whether owner, joint, or authorized-user status is reported correctly.
Amounts and payment history
Compare balances, limits, past-due amounts, payment status, and late-payment history with records you trust.
Dates and duplicates
Review open dates, last-payment or delinquency dates where shown, and whether the same obligation appears more than once incorrectly.
Inquiries and identity-theft signals
Review unfamiliar inquiries or accounts carefully. If you genuinely suspect identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov and consider fraud-alert or freeze guidance from official sources.
