Check the reported field before challenging it

Read the Equifax entry carefully and compare it with your own records. Look at identity information, ownership, account status, dates, balances, limits, payment history, and remarks. A report can contain a genuine error, but an accurate negative item is not inaccurate just because it is unfavorable. Focus on the field you can specifically explain.

If the same account appears on another bureau report, compare the details. Differences can give you a useful question to investigate, but they are not automatic proof that one bureau is wrong. Keep a copy of the report you reviewed so you know exactly what appeared at the time.

Gather evidence that matches the issue

Choose documents because they support the exact fact you are raising. A payment confirmation may help with a payment-status question; an account letter may help with an ownership or closure question; a statement can help with a balance or limit question. Keep originals and submit copies when appropriate.

Write a short case note describing what the report says, what you believe is correct, and how your document supports that position. This makes the record easier to follow if you need to revisit it later.

Keep the dispute narrow and truthful

Describe the specific information you believe should be investigated and the correction you are requesting. Avoid generic templates that claim every negative account violates the law. Do not state that an account resulted from identity theft unless that is actually true. CredBounce can help organize a draft, but you control and verify every fact before using it.

The goal is a clear record, not dramatic language. Names, dates, account references, and a concise description of the disputed field are more useful than unsupported accusations.

Use Equifax’s current official instructions

Equifax maintains its own dispute process and can change the details of how it accepts submissions. Review the current official instructions before sending anything. Save the submission date, any confirmation or case number, the exact wording you sent, and a list of the supporting documents.

Read the result against your original case

When you receive a response, compare it with the report and evidence you saved. Note whether the information changed, stayed the same, or needs another legitimate follow-up. If you have new relevant documentation, preserve it with the case before deciding what to do next.
